Limited Powers

Perhaps more specifically, we refer here to the “enumerated” powers listed in Article 1 Section 8 of the United States Constitution and buttressed by Amendment X.  The continuous violations of the principle of limited government are the greatest threat to freedom.  The Founders specifically listed the powers assigned to the federal government for a reason:  to prevent an excess of centralized power which always leads to dictatorship.

The USFA embraces the concept of limited federal powers and encourages a return to the proper role of government as spelled out in our Constitution – federal powers are few and specific; the remaining powers belong to the States or to the people.  Attempts to hide behind the “necessary and proper” clause or the “commerce” clause of Section 8 to justify extra-constitutional legislation is a treasonous reading of our Constitution and must be defeated at every turn.

George Washington said, “. . .cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be able to subvert the Power of the People and to usurp for themselves the reins of Government; destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion…The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all departments in one, and thus to create, whatever the form of government, a real despotism…” — George Washington, Farewell Address, 1796
